Three Drivers Face Grid Penalties for F1 Malaysia Return

Arvid Lindblad will start from the back of the grid at the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang this weekend. The Racing Bulls driver is set to take multiple fresh power unit components, triggering a back-of-the-grid penalty. The team announced the decision on Thursday ahead of the race weekend.

Hadjar Also Hit, Colapinto Follows

Lindblad isn't the only one facing a grid drop. His teammate, Isack Hadjar, revealed in his Thursday media session that he will also serve a five-place penalty. "It's going to be difficult for me, I should be taking five places penalty, but even like that, I believe it's a track [where if] you have the race pace, you go up," Hadjar said. "If we can't, then that means we're not fast enough. So let's see."

The penalty is a setback for Racing Bulls as they fight for points in the midfield. Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto must also serve a five-place drop for causing a collision with teammate Pierre Gasly and McLaren's Lando Norris in Baku. Colapinto was initially given a 10-second time penalty, but as he was out of the race and unable to serve it, the sanction was converted into a five-place grid drop for his next race.

Impact on Strategy and Standings

With three drivers starting from the back or dropping down, the dynamics at Sepang are expected to shift. Lindblad, starting from the back, will need to work extra hard to get into the points. Hadjar and Colapinto, despite only dropping five places, must be cautious as Sepang demands maximum speed and precise tyre strategy.

For Racing Bulls, the double penalty is a mental and technical test. The team must ensure both drivers can maximize the car's potential. Hadjar remains optimistic, as he said, that the Sepang track still offers opportunities to recover if the race pace is there.

On the other hand, the Baku incident between Colapinto, Gasly, and Norris serves as a reminder of the intense competition on track. The stewards' decision to convert the time penalty into a grid drop shows consistency in enforcing the rules. Now, Colapinto must prove he can race cleanly and competitively in Malaysia.

It will be intriguing to see how these three drivers handle the pressure. Young Lindblad has a chance to show his mental toughness, while Hadjar and Colapinto must be clever to seize every opportunity. Sepang always delivers drama, and these grid penalties add another layer to the competition.
