Lance Stroll found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Following his retirement from the race, the Aston Martin driver was caught in a heated exchange with a marshal while trying to return to the paddock. Fan footage circulating online captured the tense moment.
The Baku weekend was another struggle for Stroll. An issue with the AMR26 forced him to park the car and retire early. The Canadian has yet to score points this season, with only four finishes to his name. Aston Martin, meanwhile, languishes near the bottom of the standings with just a single point.
In the video, the marshal calmly approaches Stroll, likely explaining that he must wait until the end of the race to pass through. But Stroll was having none of it. “I’m not waiting here until the end of the session. I’m out of here,” he said. The exchange escalated when he added, “Give me the radio,” after the marshal spoke. The tight street circuit often makes it difficult for drivers to access the paddock after an early exit, forcing them to take a longer route. Stroll was apparently not prepared to do so.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Stroll denied knowing of any car problem that led to his retirement. When told this was a recurring topic, he seemed resigned. “We’re going to be having many more of these conversations because we’re not bringing many upgrades this year,” he said. “Things aren’t changing right now. We’re planning more for next year, so this year we know it’s going to be like this.”
He also admitted there were few positives to take from Baku. “No, there are not many positives right now. Probably no positives,” he replied when told that having this issue with a new engine was not a good sign. Aston Martin’s season has been an uphill battle, and the focus is already shifting to next year’s car.
Despite both Aston Martin drivers taking new components beyond the limit and serving grid penalties, neither finished the race. With only one point to their name, the team’s campaign continues to disappoint. The incident with the marshal only adds to the frustration.
It’s a reminder that pressure in the paddock is not limited to the track. Stroll, usually composed, showed his frustration. Fans will hope he can channel that energy into performance as the season progresses.
