Stellantis has welcomed the Italian government's decree granting a vehicle tax exemption for 2027. The measure applies to one vehicle per person powered by petrol, diesel, or hybrid, provided its output does not exceed 80 kW. It aims to support more efficient mobility while steering toward sustainability. Owners of passenger cars and users of leased or rented vehicles are also covered. If multiple vehicles meet the criteria, the benefit goes only to the one with lower power.
The group notes that its broad brand portfolio means several models could potentially qualify. Stellantis' list breaks down, brand by brand, the main versions that technically fall within the decree's threshold. This is not just good news for consumers but also a signal that Stellantis is ready to leverage the regulation to strengthen its position in Italy's competitive market.
Citroen to Leapmotor: Who Makes the Cut?
For Citroen, mentioned versions include the C3 Turbo 100 (manual) and Hybrid 110 (automatic), plus the C3 Aircross SUV Turbo 100 (manual). There's also the C4 Hybrid 110 and Berlingo diesel 100 hp. Meanwhile, FIAT lists the Pandina Hybrid, 500 Hybrid, Grande Panda Hybrid, Grande Panda petrol Turbo 100, 600 petrol Turbo 100, 600 Hybrid, and Qubo L Diesel 100 hp. Notably, early 2027 will see the Grizzly and Grizzly Fastback petrol Turbo 100 hp.
Jeep joins with the Avenger 1.2 Turbo Petrol 100 hp (manual) and 1.2 e-Hybrid 110 hp (automatic). Lancia Ypsilon appears in Turbo 100 hp and hybrid 110 hp versions featuring a 48V system and a 6-speed e-DCT automatic. Opel offers the Corsa (petrol 100 hp and Hybrid 110 hp), Frontera (petrol 100 hp or Hybrid 110 hp), and Combo in various lengths, including 7 seats and a 100 hp diesel engine.
Peugeot includes the 208 (petrol 100 hp and Hybrid 110 hp) and 2008 with the same hybrid powertrain, plus the Rifter BlueHDI diesel 100 hp. Finally, Leapmotor is cited for an exemption across its entire range, with models like the B10 REEV Hybrid and C10 REEV Hybrid equipped with Range Extender technology. This shows Stellantis is not only focusing on established European brands but also preparing its electrified and range-extender lineup to benefit from the incentive.
From a strategic standpoint, this policy could catalyse sales in the low-to-mid power segment. Consumers who were previously hesitant to switch to hybrids or efficient diesels now have a stronger financial reason. For Stellantis, pushing these models means accelerating the uptake of mild-hybrid and range-extender technology in a price-sensitive market.
The competitive impact is also intriguing. Other brands in Italy will fight hard in the sub-80 kW bracket, as annual tax exemption can save long-term running costs. Stellantis is clearly seizing the moment by preparing a comprehensive list well before the rule takes effect, signalling readiness to dealers and consumers.
However, it's worth noting this is only potential based on technical characteristics. Final implementation still depends on secondary regulations and per-model verification. Still, this move adds dynamism to Italy's automotive market ahead of 2027, and Stellantis is at the front of the grid to capitalise on it.
