Sergio Perez has responded to claims that he is “overdelivering” in Cadillac's debut F1 season, insisting his form is simply a product of better circumstances.
After a tough final stint at Red Bull, Perez took a year off in 2025 before joining the new Cadillac squad. Despite modest results, many pundits have praised his performances as exceeding expectations for a rookie team.
But the Mexican driver rejects that narrative. “People think I'm overdelivering at the moment, but I was driving already at a very high level earlier, given the circumstances I was in,” he said. “There's no difference with this new generation of cars.”
His last six months at Red Bull were particularly difficult, as he struggled to match Max Verstappen's pace and often failed to break into the top 10 in qualifying. Perez explained that external factors, not his driving, were to blame.
“I wasn't able to show my true potential because of very different circumstances in the last six months at Red Bull. There were a lot of circumstances behind it,” he explained. Now, with a fresh environment, he feels more at ease.
Perez is currently 20th in the standings, but remains optimistic. “I'm really happy with the level at the moment, with my pace. I seem to be getting better and better. I just have to keep performing,” he said. His focus is on securing Cadillac's historic first points finish.
