The junior single-seater landscape continues to evolve as Sebastian Wheldon prepares for an official graduation to the FIA Formula 3 championship in 2027. The Anglo-American youngster has secured a highly coveted seat with Trident Motorsport, where he will join his recent Formula Regional rival.
This move sets up a fascinating intra-team dynamic as Wheldon links up with Kean Nakamura-Berta inside the Italian outfit's three-car lineup. Both drivers fought hard against each other in European competition last season, and their partnership brings immense potential to the grid.
The 17-year-old finished as the runner-up in this year’s Formula Regional European Championship while driving for MP Motorsport. His campaign featured four stellar race victories, highlighted by a dominant double win at the team’s home round at Zandvoort and a brilliant performance at the season finale in Hockenheim to secure the runner-up spot in the standings.
Wheldon’s motorsport journey has progressed rapidly since his car racing debut in 2023, where he clinched the Skip Barber Formula Race Series title in the United States. The son of late 2005 IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon then finished third in the USF Juniors support series before making a decisive switch to European circuits in 2025 to compete in Italian F4 with Prema.
Trident has established itself as a powerhouse in the F3 category, capturing three consecutive drivers' titles with Gabriel Bortoleto, Leonardo Fornaroli, and Rafael Camara. Although the Italian squad finished second this past season as Campos Racing and Freddie Slater gained the upper hand, the team's seat remains one of the most prestigious destinations on the junior ladder.
Reflecting on his graduation to F3, Wheldon acknowledges the magnitude of the challenge ahead. "There’s a lot of pressure, as I’ll be racing for one of the most successful teams in the category," Wheldon stated.
