Netflix once again brings the story of Michael Schumacher to the screen with its latest documentary, "Schumacher '94 – The Birth of a Legend". Premiering on October 2, 2026, it is the second documentary about the German legend following "Schumacher" (2021). We had the chance to watch it early, and here is our full review for Formula 1 fans.

Focus on the Dramatic 1994 Season
The title says it all: the documentary chronicles the 1994 Formula 1 season, at the end of which Schumacher became World Champion for the first time with Benetton. It was one of the most dramatic years in F1 history, marked by several tragic accidents and numerous controversies. The film also lives up to its subtitle, "The Birth of a Legend", by looking beyond 1994 to explore Schumacher's career, though not as extensively as the previous documentary. Individual episodes from before 1994 add context.
What quickly becomes clear is how formative 1994 was for Schumacher. His transformation from rising talent to F1 superstar and paddock "bad boy" is portrayed vividly. The documentary also highlights just how mentally demanding the season was for him, and how much he changed within a few months. Testimonies from those close to him, such as his wife Corinna and then-manager Willi Weber, add depth.
However, anyone hoping for new information about Schumacher's health will be disappointed: it is not addressed at all.
Visual and Audio Strengths
The images, sound – including those V8 and V10 engines! – and editing bring the drama of the 1994 season back to life. A handful of recreated scenes, showing Schumacher at work in his helmet and overalls in the Benetton cockpit, add depth beyond the original footage. They work well as a complement to the authentic archive material, which is beautifully presented.
Many of Schumacher's former companions also have their say: Corinna, Weber, as well as his former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, race engineer Pat Symonds, former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, and Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer, familiar to German viewers from RTL's F1 broadcasts. All of them witnessed Schumacher's rise at close quarters.
The documentary also includes archive interviews with Schumacher himself, adding a personal touch. However, some fans might find the narrative too focused on the German perspective, given the many contributors from RTL. Nevertheless, "Schumacher '94" is essential viewing for F1 fans, especially those who want to relive one of the most controversial and thrilling seasons in history.
