George Russell delivered a flawless qualifying performance at the 2026 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing his fifth pole of the season with a commanding eight-tenths margin over Charles Leclerc. Meanwhile, his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli suffered a disastrous Q1 exit after hitting the wall at Turn 1, forcing him to start from P16.
For Russell, this was his 15th pole of the season and extended Mercedes' perfect pole record. He received the Pirelli Pole Position Award from MotoGP legend Casey Stoner. This result gives Russell a golden opportunity to claw back crucial points from his teammate, who will start from the eighth row.
Qualifying was delayed by five minutes after an early incident involving Lance Stroll, who spun at the newly resurfaced Turn 7, triggering a yellow flag. However, the real drama unfolded when Kimi Antonelli clipped the wall at Turn 1, breaking his front-left suspension and ending his session prematurely. His race engineer, Peter 'Bono' Bonnington, instructed the Italian to stop for safety reasons.
This marked Antonelli's first Q1 elimination of the season, and it came at the same circuit where Oscar Piastri's championship charge began a year ago. While Antonelli has shown he can fight back from the back of the grid at Monza, overtaking around the tight Baku Street Circuit will be a far tougher challenge.
On the other side of the garage, Max Verstappen, who struggled early on with bottoming issues that compromised his braking stability, bounced back to briefly top the timesheets but ultimately had to settle for eighth. Oscar Piastri completed the top three, while Lando Norris, who experienced understeer at Turn 16, improved to P7.
With this result, the championship battle intensifies. Russell now has a great chance to reduce the points gap to his teammate, while Verstappen and Piastri will look to maximize their races from their starting positions. Tomorrow's race promises to be thrilling on the challenging Baku street circuit.
