George Russell has etched his name into the Formula 1 history books. The Mercedes driver completed a perfect weekend at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix: pole position, race win, fastest lap, and leading every single lap. This marks Russell's first career grand slam and makes him the 29th driver in F1 history to achieve the feat.

Russell did it in dominant fashion at the Baku City Circuit, even though the race was held on Saturday. Antonelli achieved the feat a few months ago in Monaco. This makes Mercedes the first team in 50 years to have two drivers each score a grand slam in the same season.
The last time something similar happened was in 1976, when Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni—both driving for Ferrari—each claimed a grand slam. Interestingly, neither went on to win the world championship that year. However, the situation for Russell and Antonelli is different: both are still in the thick of the title fight, and Mercedes is building momentum.
For Russell, this grand slam is also a personal vindication after several up-and-down seasons. He had struggled to consistently fight at the front, but now he is showing the maturity of a team leader. The Baku win might be about more than just the trophy—it could be the confidence boost that propels him through the rest of the season.
A Rare Feat in the Modern Era
Grand slams are not easy to come by. Throughout F1 history, only a select few drivers have managed it. Legend Jim Clark still holds the record with eight grand slams, all achieved within four seasons between 1962 and 1965. Behind him, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen each have six—a testament to their dominance in the modern era.
Russell now joins that elite group, albeit with just one. But with Mercedes' form on the up, it's not unreasonable to think he could add more. What's clear is that the Azerbaijan grand slam is a statement: Russell is ready to be a serious threat for the remainder of the championship.
Meanwhile, the standings remain tight. This victory at least keeps Russell within striking distance of the leaders. With races remaining, every point will matter. And for Mercedes, the signal that they are back in the winner's circle is a valuable asset.
