George Russell secured a dominant pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli crashed out in Q1 and will start from the back of the grid.
At the 6km Baku City Circuit, Antonelli hit the barriers on the inside of Turn 1 during Q1, causing terminal front-left suspension damage to his Mercedes W17. Although he had already set a time quick enough to advance to Q2, he was unable to continue and is set to start 16th at best.
Russell, who had shown strong pace in practice, capitalised fully to claim his fifth pole of the season, beating Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri. This marks Russell's fifth pole in eight races so far.
McLaren surprised in Q3 when Piastri and Lando Norris initially outpaced Russell. However, Piastri's 1m43.571s was no match for Russell's 1m43.037s on his second run. The Briton then improved to a stunning 1m42.526s on his final attempt, securing pole by nearly eight tenths of a second over Leclerc.
Leclerc had to settle for second after a different run plan, but could not challenge Russell's pace. Piastri completed the top three.
Isack Hadjar celebrated his return from injury with fourth, while Norris had to settle for fifth after a scruffy final lap. Lewis Hamilton was sixth, with Pierre Gasly seventh for Alpine. Max Verstappen could only manage eighth after being held up by yellow flags for Norris' off.
Carlos Sainz made the most of Williams' upgraded FW48 to take ninth, and Franco Colapinto completed the top ten after an erratic Q3. The battle for the final Q3 spots was incredibly close, with Sainz securing ninth and Colapinto snatching tenth from Oliver Bearman in the dying seconds.
