George Russell reasserted his Formula 1 2026 dominance with a commanding pole-to-flag victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was untouchable from the start, despite two safety car periods threatening his lead. This marks his third win of the season and his first since the Austrian GP in June.
From Friday qualifying, Russell had already sent a warning. He secured pole by a massive eight-tenths margin—a gap rarely seen in Baku. In the race, his Mercedes looked at ease, maintaining a comfortable gap on the demanding street circuit.
Russell made a clean getaway, defending his lead into Turn 1, while Oscar Piastri passed Charles Leclerc, who started second. Russell opted for medium tyres, while his closest rivals chose softs. However, tyre degradation was not severe on the low-impact street track, making a one-stop strategy the optimal choice.
Mid-race, chaos erupted. Two safety cars were deployed due to incidents, forcing the front-runners to pit. Russell retained the lead, followed by Piastri and Max Verstappen. But on the lap 36 restart, bedlam broke loose. Franco Colapinto lost control and speared into his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, also collecting Lando Norris. Kimi Antonelli narrowly escaped the carnage. Meanwhile, Arvid Lindblad spun Liam Lawson, adding to the Turn 1 melee.
Amidst the chaos, Russell remained composed and controlled the race to the checkered flag. Verstappen tried to close in late, but Russell gave him no opening. “We knew our pace was strong, and I just had to stay focused,” Russell said after the race. His teammate, Antonelli, impressed by recovering from 16th to fifth.
This victory extends Russell's lead in the drivers' championship. Verstappen finished second, with Piastri completing the podium. Leclerc and Hamilton scored valuable points for Ferrari. The result in Baku confirms that Mercedes and Russell are a formidable package—at least for now.
With such performances, it's hard to see Russell faltering. He and Mercedes seem to have found the right formula for the rest of 2026. Rivals must dig deep if they want to halt their charge.
