Russell Admits F1 2026 Title Hopes Almost Gone: I'm Not in the Fight
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
George Russell is 81 points down on Kimi Antonelli

George Russell is facing the harsh reality of this year's Formula 1 title race. The Mercedes driver could only manage fifth at the Spanish Grand Prix and was beaten by teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the fifth consecutive race.

The defeat in Madrid has left Russell trailing Antonelli by a massive 81 points in the drivers' standings. The 20-year-old Italian has now won eight of 14 races and looks unstoppable. With nine rounds remaining, Russell's chances are fading fast.

"I'm not going to say it's over, but it's exceptionally unlikely that I'm in this fight," Russell admitted after the race. "I'm not even thinking about being in the fight because I don't think I am in the fight. It almost just allows me to focus race by race and try to win as many as possible."

His words reflect a driver who has accepted that the championship may be out of reach. While mathematically possible, Russell is choosing to be realistic and focus on maximizing results each weekend.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff remains confident that Russell can still become a world champion in the future. "You can have good races, bad races, good years and bad years, but we're talking about the driver that has won everything you could have potentially won before," Wolff said.

Wolff added that Russell needs to find a way to unleash his potential, including the psychological aspect. "If you have a run like him this year, you're taking a beating. But the great ones, they recover. I think George has all it needs to fight for championships, and even if that one has maybe sailed, there will be more."

With nine races left, Russell can still close the gap if he performs consistently. However, given Antonelli's impressive form, his chances are slim. One thing is certain: Russell is not giving up and will fight until the end of the season.
