Nico Rosberg has never been one to mince words. The 2016 Formula 1 world champion has cast a spotlight on George Russell's situation as the 2026 title slips further from his grasp. Speaking on Sky F1, Rosberg questioned whether self-doubt is creeping into the Briton's mindset.
Russell began the season with a dominant win in Australia, seemingly laying the foundation for a title challenge. But since then, teammate Kimi Antonelli has taken five consecutive victories, opening a healthy points lead. Russell now trails by 81 points with only nine races remaining. Mathematically, it's still possible. Realistically, the odds are daunting.
Rosberg praised Russell's steeliness in the face of adversity. "I'm very impressed with George because he's really a perfectionist and he tries to cover every single aspect of his human performance," he said. "I know he's even working on his mental state. He's meditating, he's doing everything he can, and I really admire that. But it's all the more tough for him because he doesn't understand himself."
That statement cuts to the core. Russell has always been fast, at least on par with his teammate. But suddenly, it's gone away from him. Rosberg called it "really painful" as doubt creeps in: "Am I not enough? Am I just not good enough, or was I better in the past, and I'm just doing something wrong now?"
The 2026 season is proving a mental test for Russell. After his Australia win, he took two more victories, but inconsistent performances and a poor weekend in Madrid have widened the gap. While Antonelli remains consistent, Russell battles internal and external pressure.
Rosberg, who endured his own fierce battles with Lewis Hamilton, understands how doubt can gnaw at a driver. "It doesn't matter how confident you are. It then comes," he said. "It's really difficult."
With nine races left, Russell still has the resources to turn the tide. But time is running out. If he is to pull off one of the greatest title comebacks in F1 history, he must find answers to the questions that now haunt him.
