Renault 8 Gordini EV Production Confirmed After R5 Turbo 3E Launch

French manufacturer Renault has officially opened the door to bringing its iconic retro electric concept car into full commercial production. Speculation surrounding the road-going version of this heritage-inspired model has intensified after top company executives confirmed that the project remains firmly within their long-term strategic roadmap for future performance vehicles.

Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive revealed that public reception toward the battery-powered concept has been overwhelmingly positive since its initial unveiling. The enthusiastic feedback from automotive enthusiasts demonstrates that modern electric powertrains can successfully deliver deep emotional appeal and engaging driving dynamics without sacrificing heritage. However, the manufacturer stressed that concrete steps toward assembly lines will only happen after completing current commercial milestones.

According to reports from FormulaPassion, the primary focus for the brand right now is successfully launching and delivering its upcoming high-performance electric hatchback to early reservation holders. "With the R5 Turbo 3E, we wanted to prove that we are able to offer sportiness and fun even with an electric vehicle. And when we talked about the 8 Gordini, we wanted to show that we can create an electric car capable of transmitting strong emotions, sportiness, and great charm. No one told me: 'ah, it's electric, so I don't like it'. We must first sell the R5 Turbo 3E and deliver the first units. After that, the 8 Gordini could be one of the opportunities to seize," Fabrice Cambolive told Autocar.

Elaborating on the vehicle's development philosophy, Renault concept car chief Roman Gauvin emphasized that the project was deliberately engineered to remain accessible and genuinely fun rather than chasing aggressive track lap records. The design team aimed to capture the accessible spirit of the original 1964 ancestor, delivering a nimble, compact machine focused purely on driving enjoyment rather than shaving fractions of a second off a Nurburgring lap time.
