Red Bull Fire 2027 Title Warning After 'Hard Reality' Realisation

Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies insists that for 2027, the Milton Keynes squad will be fully equipped to launch a title bid. The statement comes after what he described as a "hard reality" check at the Australian Grand Prix.

The 2026 season began with Red Bull trailing the Mercedes W17 and Ferrari SF-26. Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar were locked in a battle with the McLaren MCL40 for third or fourth best car.

Unlike Mercedes and Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren could not fully shift focus to 2026 development during the 2025 title run-in. Verstappen narrowly missed the title, falling just two points short of Lando Norris. This extra development on the 2025 car had a knock-on effect for the 2026 car, compounded by Red Bull becoming a power unit manufacturer for the first time with Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT).

Mekies admitted that upon arriving in Melbourne for the season opener, the team had to face a 1.2-second deficit to the front. "You get to Melbourne, and you get these massive positives: the dark cloud is not there anymore, and actually, we are going to fight this season," he told RACER. "But then the hard reality is that you are 1.2 seconds off the pace, which in fairness is probably quite logical if you think how late we pushed last year."

He explained that the deficit came from both the chassis and power unit sides. However, he remained optimistic due to Red Bull's renowned development pace. In just half a season, most of that 1.2-second gap was clawed back. "We are probably left with the last 0.3s compared to the ultimate pace," he said. "The last 0.3s are the most difficult ones, and only time will tell if we manage to get those."

He also praised the technical team led by Pierre Wache and Ben Hodgkinson. Thanks to their efforts, Red Bull is back in contention, fighting for podiums and wins. "I don't think we go into next year with any disadvantage compared to Mercedes, McLaren or Ferrari," Mekies asserted. "It means that you will have four top teams with a fairly equal chance to develop their car to challenge for the title next year."

This warning is clearly aimed at Red Bull's rivals. After a tough period, the Austrian team is confident of being a serious contender in 2027. The question now is whether they can overcome the final 0.3-second hurdle that often separates champions from the rest.
