Red Bull Ampol Racing Admits Technical Blunder on Will Brown's Car

Red Bull Ampol Racing has finally spoken out after discovering the root cause of Will Brown's sluggish performance all season. It turns out the Ford Mustang #888, driven by the 2024 Supercars champion, has been racing with an air restrictor one millimetre smaller than regulations allow. The finding emerged after the team conducted a thorough investigation following the Perth round, quickly becoming the paddock's main talking point.

Team principal Jamie Whincup revealed the issue had a significant impact on engine performance. "Since the start of this season, Car #888 has been running with an undersized engine airflow restrictor. This part manages airflow into the engine and has a significant negative impact on performance, roughly 1.5 tenths per lap," Whincup explained in an official statement. The component was not manufactured by the team but supplied by Supercars for all Ford Mustangs.

Brown currently sits seventh in the standings heading into the Repco Sprint Cup finale at Queensland Raceway on 21-23 August. Losing 1.5 tenths per lap is meaningful on a tight circuit. The team has offered a deep apology to everyone involved, including loyal fans.

Supercars also issued a statement, explaining the component was originally loaned to Triple Eight for display purposes at the team's launch in February and inadvertently remained fitted all season. Routine technical checks failed to detect the anomaly until the team itself found it.

"Supercars acknowledges and appreciates T8RE's identifying and prompt reporting of the matter," the championship said, vowing to review technical procedures. Brown will switch to a spare chassis for the Ipswich round.
