The dramatic clash between Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson during Free Practice 2 at the Mexican Grand Prix has sparked intense discussions throughout the Formula 1 paddock. Verstappen openly criticized the young New Zealander's driving behavior, suggesting that it was not smart given his ongoing battle to secure his race seat for the future.
However, Racing Bulls Team Principal Alan Permane was quick to shut down those remarks, describing the on-track collision simply as an unnecessary racing incident. Permane explained the technical context behind the drivers' frantic pushes in the final sector to ensure proper tire temperature ahead of Turn 1.
"So when you’re doing a lap here, an out-lap or a cooldown lap, one thing that’s really important is to do the last sector fast because doing that gives you tyres for Turn 1," the team boss stated regarding the competitive nature of the practice session.

Addressing media concerns about potential fallout, Permane firmly defended his driver and insisted that Lawson's position within the squad will not be jeopardized by a practice session mishap. He expressed confidence that both drivers will cool down and recognize how the situation could have been handled differently.
"That’s not the case. Look, I’m sure they’ve both got their opinion on it. I think when they look at it in the cold light of day, they’ll be calm and think, 'actually, we could have both done better'," Permane elaborated.
While rumors regarding potential replacements such as Nikola Tsolov continue to circulate for upcoming seasons, the team remains fully supportive of their current lineup. Read our in-depth analysis and stay updated with the latest paddock news right here on Sportrik.
