Porsche's iconic Pink Pig livery is set to grace the track once again, this time in Australia's GT World Challenge. Tom McLennan and Andrew Georgiadis will pilot a Porsche 911 GT3 R prepared by Bathurst 12 Hour-winning squad Earl Bamber Motorsport (EBM).
The car is a 991.2 model that made its debut in 2019. The Pink Pig livery pays homage to the legendary Porsche 917/20 from the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, famously adorned with dashed lines and the names of meat cuts. Now, that historic touch arrives in Australia to battle in the Pro-Am class.
McLennan, fresh off two test days at Queensland Raceway, is eager to make his GT3 debut. "I can't wait to get down there just to figure how the Porsche handles a real high-speed track. There are similarities between the GT3 spec and a Cup Car at Queensland, but in Sydney it's going to be totally different due to the high-speed nature of the layout. I've heard Turn 1 is flat, so that will be exciting in a GT3 R," he said.
For McLennan, this step is the next chapter in his Porsche career after racing in Monochrome GT4 Australia, Porsche Equity-One Carrera Cup Australia, and Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge. He also praised his teammate, saying Georgiadis is "no slouch" and will adapt quickly to GT3.
Georgiadis, another product of Australia's Porsche ladder, described driving the 911 GT3 R as "unreal." "The car is brilliant and the aero is something I'm going to have to get used to. It's a very, very quick package and obviously the braking marker gets pushed back a bit further, so I just need to put my trust in it. We have some test days coming up, so we hopefully can dial ourselves in and prepare intricately. Partnering up with a co-driver is the most exciting part for me because I haven't done that at this level before," he commented.
For Earl Bamber Motorsport, this marks a return to GT World Challenge Australia. Team manager Ben Jenkins stated, "We had a great test in Sydney to familiarise the guys with the track in addition to getting some more handy laps in the car. We'll be looking to get some podiums and there is full confidence in the driver line-up to compete against a strong list of Pro-Am teams. This program comes at a good time due to Tom and Andrew being busy in Carrera Cup, plus the 991.2 is a model we know well from its four-year run on the global stage. Bringing the Porsche brand back to the outright battle is awesome, too."
Round 5 of GT World Challenge Australia takes place at Sydney Motorsport Park on September 18-20. With a blend of young talent, a winning team, and a historic livery, the Pro-Am battle is set to heat up.
