Oscar Piastri faced scathing criticism from 1997 Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve after committing what was described as a "rookie error" at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The incident occurred at Turn 1 on the opening lap, costing Piastri valuable positions and ultimately leaving him outside the points.
The race at Baku was full of drama. Piastri's McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, was the first to suffer a massive lock-up into Turn 1, forcing him to take the escape road and lose several places. But Piastri's misfortune struck later. When the race resumed after the safety car, the Australian did exactly the same: locking both front wheels and sliding off the racing line. As a result, he plummeted to 13th and missed out on points.
Villeneuve, now a Sky F1 pundit, did not hold back in calling Piastri's mistake a fundamental one. "It was a rookie mistake," he said bluntly. "He got caught out, looking in his mirrors, and just completely missed. It's the truth. Mistakes happen. You push too hard, but then you can see he was looking in his mirrors and just completely missed."
Piastri himself was baffled by the incident. "I need to look, because it was a bit weird just locking up both fronts instantly like that," he told reporters. "I didn't think I did anything spectacular. Obviously I was on a different line to what I normally would be, defending. So I don't know if I was on a crown in the road or something, but it certainly was a surprise to me."
He added that once Max Verstappen got ahead, his position was difficult to recover. "Once Max got ahead, I was never going to get back past, but it would have been interesting to see if I could keep Isack Hadjar behind. To be honest, it probably would have been tough. It's hard to tell on the medium because they were pretty heavily flat-spotted, but I didn't feel anywhere near as good on the medium as I did on the soft. I think potentially we could have been P4. One thing is saying 'we could have been', and one thing is where you actually finish."
Norris also suffered misfortune. He was taken out of the race by Franco Colapinto. The incident left Norris furious, and on Monday he publicly apologised for stating that Colapinto deserved a race ban. Nevertheless, the Azerbaijan GP was a disappointing weekend for McLaren, who brought car updates but still struggled to compete at the front.
Piastri's and Norris's errors highlight the immense pressure at the Baku circuit, especially with a car that is not yet fully competitive. Now, Piastri must bounce back and prove that the mistake is just a small bump in his F1 career.
