Oscar Piastri has spotted a fascinating trend across the Formula 1 field and firmly hopes McLaren will be the next outfit to take a turn leading the pack at the Sepang International Circuit. Friday practice sessions showcased an incredibly tight battle among the top four constructors, with both Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc taking turns at the top of the timesheets.
The opening day in Malaysia proved to be a mixed bag of competitive flashes, with Mercedes showing early pace in the morning before Ferrari stepped up during the afternoon running. Meanwhile, the Woking squad had to dig deep to overcome a sluggish start during the first practice session before making meaningful progress ahead of FP2.
Piastri ended the second practice in sixth place, while his teammate extracted more performance to finish third fastest, just a tenth adrift of the leading Ferrari. The young Australian acknowledged that his machine was initially a handful during the opening session, but praised the team's ability to bounce back with significant setup changes.
Reflecting on the unpredictable pecking order, Piastri noted how everyone seemed to have their moment in the spotlight. He pointed out the strong form shown by their direct rivals and emphasized the importance of maintaining their upward trajectory as the race weekend moves toward the crucial qualifying phase.
With looming rain clouds failing to materialize during FP2, teams had to navigate unusual tyre strategies throughout the afternoon. Having unlocked a much better balance from their car later in the day, the papaya squad enters the remainder of the weekend eager to see where their hard work lands them on the grid.
