Piastri Could Leave McLaren, Smedley Highlights Key Difference

Oscar Piastri is enduring a frustrating season at McLaren, and his future with the team is now under scrutiny after former F1 engineer Rob Smedley pointed to a stark difference in attitude between him and teammate Lando Norris.

McLaren boasts the longest unchanged driver line-up on the current grid, with both drivers locked into long-term contracts. The team enjoyed a stellar run, peaking with a double championship success last year, with Norris clinching the drivers' title.

However, McLaren has failed to carry that title-contending form into 2026, and Norris has continued to outpace Piastri, just as he did in the latter half of his championship-winning campaign. This has led to speculation that Piastri might seek opportunities elsewhere.

When asked about the possibility on the High Performance Racing podcast, Smedley replied: "Yeah, as long as it was a better team. Lando says all the time, 'I want to spend my whole career here.' He's in a honeymoon period and he loves the team, blah blah blah. But you don't hear Oscar saying that very much, 'I'll spend my whole career here.'"

The comments highlight a potential rift in commitment, even as McLaren returned to the top step of the podium in Hungary with a significant car upgrade aiding Norris's victory. For Piastri, the pressure is mounting to prove he can match his teammate, or he may face an uncertain future away from Woking.
