Bearman and Albon endured a difficult outing at Sepang

The Formula 1 race weekend at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia left Ollie Bearman deeply frustrated. The young British driver had to settle for a 14th-place finish following a chaotic race that featured a rain-delayed start and treacherous track conditions from the moment the lights went out.

The root of the disaster stemmed from early tyre strategy choices. Ollie Bearman revealed that he was adamant about starting on intermediate tyres. Given the soaked track, it was clearly the right call, while those who gambled on slick tyres immediately struggled for grip on the slippery asphalt.

However, the Haas team opted for a split strategy across their cars. A last-minute decision forced Ollie Bearman onto slick tyres—a choice that instantly derailed his afternoon.

"It wasn't my choice. I was adamant that we start on Inters, and there was a zero percent chance that we would put the slick, but the team decided to put me on the slick at the last minute, which I didn't know about," Ollie Bearman said, as reported by Motorsport Week. "Obviously, the decision was made to split the cars from strategy. I didn't agree with it, and in hindsight, I still don't agree with it."

As the lead car ahead of teammate Esteban Ocon on the grid, Ollie Bearman felt hard done by. He argued that the lead car should normally receive the more conventional strategy, leaving any high-risk gambles to the second car. The gamble backfired severely, leaving him 40 seconds adrift of the midfield pack after the first safety car period.

Despite displaying strong pace later in the race on hard tyres and managing to overtake an Alpine, Ollie Bearman lamented a missed opportunity to fight for points. The chaotic wet start and questionable strategic gamble ultimately ruined what could have been a strong points-scoring Sunday.
