Oliver Solberg delivered one of the standout performances of Rally Portugal 2026 after dominating the rain-hit Paredes special stage on Saturday morning. The young Toyota Gazoo Racing driver moved into the overall rally lead after outperforming his main rivals in extremely low-grip conditions.
Solberg started the stage fourth overall but adapted to the changing road conditions significantly better than the rest of the leading group. The Swedish driver finished 19.1 seconds faster than teammate Sébastien Ogier, who had led the rally before the Paredes stage. As a result, Solberg now leads the overall classification by just 0.5 seconds over the eight-time world champion.
Solberg’s pace in wet conditions was not only the result of confidence behind the wheel, but also a technical approach focused on improving the setup of his Toyota Rally1 car. The Swede revealed that major damper adjustments played a crucial role in increasing grip and overall stability on the slippery Portuguese gravel roads.
“I feel comfortable driving in the rain. I opened up a lot of the damper settings to get more grip. That is what I have been missing throughout the weekend — grip,” said Solberg.
The setup changes allowed the car’s weight transfer characteristics to work more effectively on the wet surface. With road conditions constantly shifting between dry and damp sections, the ability to read grip levels accurately became a critical factor in maintaining consistent stage times.
Solberg explained that his approach was not based purely on taking maximum risks. Instead, the focus was on maintaining rhythm and reacting instantly to rapidly changing surface conditions, particularly when grip levels varied dramatically from one corner to the next.
“It is about finding a good rhythm and trying to read the conditions. One corner may be dry, but the next three are wet, so the conditions constantly change. You just need to understand where the grip is, and on corner exit you need to push the throttle fully to clean the tyres,” he explained.
The fight for victory has now intensified, with five drivers separated by less than 17.8 seconds overall. Alongside Solberg and Ogier, Thierry Neuville, Sami Pajari, and Elfyn Evans remain firmly in contention heading into the afternoon stages.
Weather conditions are expected to become an even bigger factor later in the day. Heavy rain is forecast for the remaining stages, while tyre allocation limitations are beginning to create strategic pressure across the Rally1 field.
“I think the gaps will become even bigger this afternoon if the forecast is correct. The afternoon will be difficult. We do not have many tyres because the allocation is limited. It is difficult to manage situations like this with such a small tyre supply,” Solberg added.
Five more special stages remain on Saturday before Rally Portugal reaches its final day on Sunday. With minimal gaps separating the leading drivers and rapidly evolving road conditions, tyre strategy and adaptability are expected to become decisive factors in the battle for victory.
