Esteban Ocon has officially declared himself a free agent for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The Frenchman revealed he is exploring options with other teams, though he hasn't ruled out staying at Haas.
Haas's delay in confirming its driver line-up for next year has left Ocon's future increasingly uncertain. His contract expires at the end of this season, and the American team is reportedly evaluating several candidates to partner Oliver Bearman.
"Yes, at the moment I am definitely a free agent for next year," Ocon said. "There are things in discussion that are out of my control. So I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes."
When asked if staying at Haas was an option, Ocon replied curtly, "Let's see." This response has further fueled speculation that he is actively seeking another seat on the 2027 grid.
Haas is reportedly using its Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme to evaluate several young drivers. Names like Rafael Camara, 2026 F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, and reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa have been mentioned. Recently, rumours have intensified that Camara, currently leading the F2 standings, is the strongest candidate. However, team boss Ayao Komatsu stated there are "maybe five" drivers in contention.
Amid this uncertainty, Ocon's performances have shown improvement. Despite the Haas car's inconsistency, he has delivered impressive drives, such as scoring the last point in Monaco and nearly finishing in the points in Madrid. "I know it's been an ongoing issue," he said. "It's reassuring that I'm doing a good job. My performance hasn't been an issue this year. I've performed every time I had the car."
Haas has yet to pinpoint the root cause of its car's inconsistency. Komatsu suspects aerodynamic sensitivity or a parts quality control problem. "We haven't been hiding from it," Komatsu admitted. "But it's been quite disappointing at times."
Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman says he is ready to step up as team leader if Ocon leaves. He admits he has learned a lot from his teammate over the past two years, especially in terms of technical feedback in the engineering room. "I think I'm ready," Bearman said. "I've learned a lot from Esteban."
