Esteban Ocon has surprisingly admitted that he is currently a free agent for the 2027 season. The French driver made the revelation during the media day ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on Wednesday, sparking fresh speculation about his Formula 1 future.
Ocon's contract with Haas expires at the end of the 2026 season, but no extension has been agreed. When asked about his status, he said, "At the moment, I'm definitely a free agent for next year. There are things in discussion that are out of my control. I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes."
The statement immediately raised questions about whether Ocon is exploring options with other teams. He replied firmly, "Of course." However, when asked if Haas remains an option, he simply said, "Let's see."
Ocon's position at Haas is under scrutiny. His performances this season have been deemed less impressive than those of his teammate, Ollie Bearman. This has put the American team's driver lineup at risk of change for next season.
Several names are reportedly on Haas's radar. Ferrari junior and Formula 2 frontrunner Rafael Camara is said to be at the front of the queue to replace Ocon. Additionally, reserve drivers Ryo Hirakawa and Jack Doohan, as well as reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, have been evaluated by the team.
Recently, Haas conducted a test with Camara, Hirakawa, and Fornaroli in an F1 car at Portimao. Ocon seemed unfazed by this. "The team is allowed to test all the drivers if they want. We have a TPC program that's very important to us. It's also some kind of revenue for us," he said.
He emphasized that the drivers are not the main issue. "It is clear that inside the team the drivers are not the problem. We are all pushing together in the same direction to try and get more out of the car. And myself and Ollie, when we have the car to perform, we do," he added.
Ocon's future is one of the last pieces of the 2027 F1 driver market puzzle. If he does leave, Haas must act quickly to secure a replacement. Meanwhile, Ocon could still land a seat at another team, though nothing has been confirmed.
