Lando Norris stole the spotlight in Spanish Grand Prix qualifying with a pole lap that McLaren boss Andrea Stella hailed as a “masterpiece.” The Briton edged out Kimi Antonelli by a mere 0.011 seconds, setting an unbeatable 1:31.824.
Throughout the Madrid weekend, Mercedes and Ferrari had set the pace from FP1 to the end of Q2, with Max Verstappen occasionally breaking their dominance. In Q3, Lewis Hamilton briefly took provisional pole before Norris delivered a stunning lap, despite a wide moment at the final corner.
Incredible Precision Amidst Challenges
Stella expressed his admiration. “I think that's a masterpiece,” he told Sky Sports. “We had seen all weekend that if we put it all together, we weren't far from the best cars. Lando did it only in the final run of Q3.”
He added that Norris actually made a three-tenths mistake at the last corner. “So, he was on an incredible lap. I think definitely one of the best of his life until the last corner,” Stella said.
What makes this feat even more remarkable is that Norris missed the entire second practice due to a gearbox problem. He could only focus on qualifying pace in FP3, with little knowledge of the car's long-run behavior. He had to rely heavily on data from teammate Oscar Piastri, who will start seventh.
“Obviously, P2 was a bit of a loss of ground because Lando lost pretty much the entire session,” Stella explained. “So, I think this makes his work in qualifying even more remarkable. And also, on Oscar, we were experiencing a little problem on the car. So, we didn't have great references.”
Big Impact for the Race
With overtaking notoriously difficult at this circuit, track position is crucial. The few passes so far have only been made using DRS. Pole position gives Norris a significant advantage to control the race from the front.
Stella even called it one of the most impressive laps he has witnessed in 450 Grands Prix. “It's about precision, braking, entry speed, kerb striking, and power application. Everything is executed with a unique level of precision,” he concluded.
This pole is not only a testament to McLaren's speed but also to Norris's mental resilience under pressure. If he can maintain this form, victory in Madrid is far from impossible.
