Lando Norris has publicly retracted his controversial demand for Franco Colapinto to receive a Formula 1 race ban following the collision at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The McLaren driver admitted his comments were made in the heat of the moment and has privately apologised to the Alpine driver.
The incident occurred on lap 36 when Colapinto locked up entering Turn 1 of the slippery Baku street circuit, triggering a multi-car pile-up that eliminated himself, his team-mate Pierre Gasly, and Norris. Norris's frustration was evident in his immediate post-race remarks, where he called for stricter penalties from the FIA stewards.
In his initial reaction, Norris described the incident as careless and costly, stating that his car parts were destroyed. He argued that drivers causing such crashes on restarts should face at least a one-race ban. The comments sparked widespread debate, especially given Colapinto's challenging rookie season.
However, after two days of reflection, Norris softened his stance. In a social media post, he issued a public apology, acknowledging that his words were wrong and that emotions got the better of him. He also confirmed that he and Colapinto have a good understanding and remain friends.
Colapinto has taken responsibility for what he called a "big mistake," which also drew criticism from Alpine team principal Flavio Briatore as it cost the team a double points finish. Despite the setback, Colapinto retains support to continue his season and improve.
