MotoGP Riders Divided Over 2027 Format Change and Risks

Ahead of the 2027 season, MotoGP is set to overhaul not only its technical regulations but also transform its weekend structure by introducing separate starting grids for the Sprint and Grand Prix. This fundamental shift has already caused a clear division within the paddock.

Alongside brand-new machines featuring engines reduced from 1,000cc to 850cc, limited aerodynamics, and Pirelli replacing Michelin as the sole tyre supplier, series owners Liberty Media are seeking to revamp the weekend spectacle. Inspired by Formula 1, MotoGP will now feature two distinct qualifying sessions to elevate the entertainment value.

Under the new schedule, Friday will host a dedicated Sprint qualifying session, while Saturday’s Q1 and Q2 sessions will set the Grand Prix grid before any racing takes place. Jorge Martin noted during a press conference in Indonesia that the changes will increase both the spectacle and the physical hazards. "There will be a lot of times to attack. The entertainment will be bigger, but so will the risks," Martin said.

Championship rival Marc Marquez echoed those concerns, stating that the new format introduces unnecessary intensity to an already grueling calendar. Meanwhile, rookie sensation Pedro Acosta warned about the toll on rider safety, emphasizing how difficult it already is to complete a full season without injury.

Beyond physical demands, several riders expressed deep frustration over a perceived lack of consultation prior to the official decision. The growing friction highlights ongoing concerns regarding how much input competitors actually have in shaping the future of the championship.
