MotoGP Mandalika 2026 Analysis: Francesco Bagnaia Resigned to Eighth Place

Francesco Bagnaia had to swallow a bitter pill once again after enduring a complicated Sprint race during the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend at the Mandalika circuit. The factory rider from Borgo Panigale had to settle for an eighth-place finish, a result that clearly highlights the ongoing struggles he faces in finding an ideal set-up on his Desmosedici machine.

The main issue plaguing the Italian rider relates closely to a lack of rear grip and severe difficulties in generating optimal temperature in the rear tire. As reported by contributor Manuel Pecino from the paddock, he admitted that he is still far from finding the competitive feeling he desperately needs to push hard from the very first lap of the race.

Evaluating his overall performance on the Mandalika track, he described the race as anonymous and quiet during the early stages. Elaborating on the technical hurdles, he explained that the lack of rear support delays the transfer of energy to the rear compound, meaning he could only start pushing the motorcycle hard once the race was already past its halfway mark.

Given this tricky situation that has yet to be fully resolved, Ducati and his engineering crew are facing immense pressure to find a setup breakthrough ahead of Sunday's main race. He candidly acknowledged that under current conditions, fighting for a top-eight position is a realistic target rather than dreaming of race victories.

Furthermore, he also touched upon the opening-corner crash involving Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez. Despite facing severe limitations with his machinery this weekend, he emphasized that he will continue pushing to extract the absolute maximum performance available from his package.
