The green light signals the start of Q1 at Motegi, and the battle for grid positions in the MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix 2026 is underway. For the early risers, this is where the drama begins: who will secure a spot in Q2 and who will face an uphill battle?
Francesco Bagnaia finds himself in Q1 after failing to break into the top ten during practice. The Ducati rider will be joined by Ai Ogura, and both are expected to fight for promotion. However, Raul Fernandez of Aprilia Trackhouse is also in the mix, ready to spring a surprise.
Marc Marquez had earlier warned that securing a front-row start would be no easy feat, pointing to the new asphalt at Motegi as a potential trap. “The new surface can catch you out without warning,” he said. “We need to be extra cautious, especially in the fast corners.”
The resurfaced track adds an extra layer of challenge. Riders must quickly adapt to the changing grip levels, and for those in Q1, it's a test of nerves. Bagnaia, usually a front-runner, will need to keep his cool to advance.
For Ogura, this is a golden opportunity to shine in front of his home crowd. The support from the grandstands could provide an extra boost. Meanwhile, Fernandez, known for his aggressive style, might just capitalize on the situation to steal a spot.
