Franco Morbidelli has unofficially confirmed that he will be racing in WorldSBK in 2027. The Italian rider was caught giving a hint while attending the WorldSBK round at Cremona this weekend.
Morbidelli, currently racing in MotoGP, is expected to join the factory Ducati team in WorldSBK to replace Nicolo Bulega. The move has been an open secret, but no official announcement has been made by the team or the rider.
In his interview with the WorldSBK broadcast after Race 2, Morbidelli expressed his admiration for Bulega's performance this season. "Ducati was very much impressive. Especially Nicolo, he did a knockout win more or less everywhere. So, it was amazing," he said.
However, the most telling moment came when he said, "It's a great emotion, also a good emotion to be over here, approaching the world that I'll be in next year. It's cool." This statement indirectly confirms that he will be racing in WorldSBK next season.
Morbidelli will partner with Iker Lecuona at the factory Ducati team. Lecuona's deal was announced after he won his first WorldSBK race at Donington in July. At Cremona, while Bulega was winning the world title, Lecuona racked up three more wins, securing his first hat-trick following a second pole taken on Saturday.
Based on his impressive performance this season, Lecuona will logically be the favourite for the 2027 WorldSBK title. However, Morbidelli's pedigree as a former Moto2 world champion and MotoGP race winner makes the battle within the Ducati team and the championship highly anticipated.
Morbidelli's move to WorldSBK marks a new chapter in his career after nine seasons in MotoGP. His experience and speed will be valuable assets for Ducati in facing fierce competition in WorldSBK.
