A cloud of mystery surrounded the Mercedes garage following the Formula 1 weekend in Malaysia, where the introduction of a latest upgrade package left the team with major questions regarding the underlying performance of the W17. Despite bringing a revised floor and sidepod package for F1's first visit to Sepang in nine years, the Brackley-based squad found themselves struggling to match Red Bull Racing's top-line pace consistently throughout the race weekend.

The final result was on course to deliver a double podium finish for the silver arrows until George Russell was forced to retire his car late in the race due to a powertrain issue. Meanwhile, Andrea Kimi Antonelli also had to fight hard on the hot Malaysian asphalt as the circuit characteristics demanded a completely different driving approach.
Throughout the sessions, the team had expressed satisfaction with the performance of the updates in higher-speed corners. However, the W17 overall failed to gel harmoniously with the circuit layout, particularly when negotiating slower corners which proved critical for lap time generation.

In the team's usual post-race debrief shared on social media channels, deputy team principal Bradley Lord provided an in-depth explanation regarding the tricky situation that forced the drivers into unusual steering inputs to secure bite through slower sections.
The combination potentially of update, track temperature and track surface caused an interaction and a set of behaviours that meant the car was not in its usual happy state, requiring drivers to turn the car on the throttle in the slow corners, which further exacerbated tyre temperature challenges.
Management described this as a 3D problem requiring thorough investigation back at the factory and ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. Such comprehensive evaluation is vital to ensure development steps point in the right direction for both the current car and next season's challenger.
