Andrea Stella, team principal of McLaren, has made it clear that the team's appeal regarding the Monaco Grand Prix result isn't just about self-interest. In his view, it's about the principles of fairness and the integrity of the sport. Stella's remarks come as the FIA International Court of Appeal hears the case on Tuesday.
The appeal, filed jointly with Red Bull, challenges the stewards' decision to rescind the time penalty given to Pierre Gasly after the Monaco Grand Prix. Several drivers, including McLaren's Oscar Piastri, had already served similar penalties during the race. The decision is seen as unfair because Gasly got his podium back while others weren't given the same opportunity.
Stella explained that McLaren is bringing two key interests to the hearing. The first is the general interest of Formula 1. He believes the post-race process in Monaco needs to be reviewed because it concerns fairness for all competitors. "The fact that the penalty was removed introduces significant elements of concern," he said. The second is McLaren's own interest, as the team feels materially disadvantaged by losing points in the constructors' championship.
"We go to the hearing with a double intent," Stella stated. "The first intent is more general than the interest of McLaren. We think the process that happened after the race in Monaco needs to be reviewed. There are also technical aspects, like how the pit limiter speed was calculated, but for me, at a high level, it's more about fairness and the principle that needs to be clarified and possibly reinstated."
The controversy stems from a timing loop error at Monaco's unique pit entry, which triggered false flags and caused many drivers to be penalized for exceeding the pitlane speed limit. Gasly, who had dropped to seventh, was later reinstated to third after Alpine's right of review. This reshuffled the order, affecting drivers like Isack Hadjar and Piastri.
This appeal has drawn attention because it involves two top teams that usually compete fiercely. However, Stella insists this isn't about team rivalry but about ensuring consistent application of rules for everyone. "It's about the integrity of the sport," he emphasized.
The hearing, which began on Tuesday, could extend beyond a single day. The outcome will determine whether the stewards' decision to rescind Gasly's penalty stands or is overturned. Regardless of the result, this case has already set a significant precedent in modern Formula 1.
