The lightweight class action delivered intense drama as Maximo Quiles successfully claimed the premier grid position during a thrilling qualifying session. Piloting his machine around the demanding Sepang International Circuit, the talented Spanish rider unleashed a blistering lap time of 2’10.396 to secure the coveted pole position for Sunday's main race.
The early qualifying phase was heavily characterized by tactical games revolving around slipstream hunting, which routinely creates traffic issues in the lower classes. Several competitors lingered in the pitlane for extended periods, ultimately resulting in nine riders missing the checkered flag to start their final flying laps. Amidst the chaos, Adrian Cruces emerged at the top of Q1 with a benchmark of 2’11.414, accompanied by Guido Pini and Ryusei Yamanaka in punching their tickets into Q2.
As the pole-deciding Q2 session got underway, the competitive tempo escalated immediately with top contenders trading rapid sectors. Red Bull KTM Ajo representatives initially dictated the pace before David Almansa stepped up to seize the provisional pole position, looking untouchable during the middle phase of the afternoon.

However, a late-session charge from the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team star completely shifted the outcome. Quiles delivered a flawless effort to dip underneath his rivals' benchmarks, edging out Brian Uriarte by a narrow margin of 0.084 seconds, while Hakim Danish rounded out the front row in third place.
Meanwhile, heartbreak struck Almansa during his final assault on the clock when he lost control at turn four, dashing any hopes of reclaiming the top spot and leaving him to settle for fourth on the grid ahead of Alvaro Carpe and Matteo Bertelle.
