Max Verstappen suffered issues on the formation lap at the Bahrain Grand Prix

Max Verstappen has led Formula 1 driver criticism following the chaotic and heavily-delayed start of the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, Malaysia.

Sunday's race had already faced a lengthy delay due to a heavy tropical thunderstorm. However, unprecedented scenes unfolded during the formation lap as bizarre technical gremlins struck multiple power units in the first wet event under the 2026 regulations.

Both Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were spotted crawling around the circuit as software complications crippled their cars ahead of the intended lights-out.

"That’s the problem that we have. These engines are so complicated and a lot of software is implemented," Verstappen stated regarding the dramatic scenes that pushed the start back by nearly two hours.

Despite the chaotic software issues that forced teams to scramble for emergency updates, Verstappen ultimately recovered to claim his first victory of the season once the track dried out.
