Max Verstappen Responds to George Russell Over F1 Cooling Vest Debate

The debate over cooling vests in Formula 1 has flared up again after George Russell brought the topic back to the table in Sepang. However, Max Verstappen firmly disagrees with the idea of making such cooling systems mandatory for the grid.

The discussion initially surfaced two years ago when the FIA contemplated making cooling vests compulsory to combat extreme heat. Strong opposition from drivers ultimately shelved the proposal, leaving it as a free choice accompanied by ballast rules for those opting out.

Russell revived the conversation because Mercedes has not prioritized developing the system due to budget cap constraints. The British driver suggested that the FIA should allocate extra budget for teams to develop adequate cooling solutions.

Verstappen quickly dismissed the notion, arguing that scorching cockpit temperatures are simply part of the grueling physical challenges F1 drivers must train for. The star driver for Red Bull maintains his stance that drivers should not make a fuss over natural weather conditions.

"I don’t need that cooling vest and I won’t use it," Verstappen told Dutch media in the paddock. He emphasized that once inside the car, the heat is something every competitor prepares for through rigorous fitness regimes.

Responding to Russell describing the Malaysian humidity as racing inside a sauna, Verstappen joked that a genuine Finnish sauna at 85 to 100 degrees Celsius is a different story entirely. He believes pushing to the physical limit is part and parcel of motorsport.

Verstappen concluded that years of dedicated physical conditioning have made him significantly fitter now compared to 2017, when he secured victory at the final Malaysian Grand Prix held to date.
