Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing has come under scrutiny after his strong criticism of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations prompted a response from Nelson Piquet Jr during the early phase of the new season.
The four-time world champion has been vocal about concerns regarding the direction of the new technical rules, particularly the next-generation power units that place greater emphasis on electrical deployment. In multiple official statements, Max Verstappen has argued that the cars are becoming increasingly complex and less enjoyable to drive, while also questioning the balance between internal combustion and electrical energy within the overall performance package.
The 2026 regulations, developed by FIA in collaboration with teams and manufacturers, are centered on energy efficiency and sustainability targets. However, several drivers have raised concerns about the potential impact on racing characteristics, particularly in terms of power delivery, drivability, and on-track dynamics.
Within this context, Max Verstappen has maintained that his position is not influenced by competitive circumstances, despite Red Bull Racing not holding a clear advantage in the early stages of the new regulation cycle. He has consistently stated that his views would remain unchanged regardless of his position in the competitive order.
Speaking on the Pelas Pistas podcast, Nelson Piquet Jr, who has close personal ties to Verstappen, offered a contrasting interpretation of the Dutch driver’s motivations.
“But that’s Max; he wants to have the best car, doesn’t he? If you ask him which season he preferred — winning the title in the final race or securing it early — he would choose the latter. He wants to win every race,” Piquet Jr said.
Piquet Jr further suggested that Verstappen’s criticism would likely be absent if he were currently driving the most competitive package on the grid, referencing the strong early performance of Mercedes.
“If Max had been in the Mercedes car, he would have been as quiet as a mouse. He wouldn’t have said anything about the regulations,” he added.
These remarks come amid the backdrop of speculation during the 2025 season linking Verstappen with a potential move to Mercedes, which has emerged as a benchmark team under the new generation of cars. The situation adds a competitive and political dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the 2026 regulations.
