Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso are approaching an important phase in discussions over their futures ahead of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. The final round before the summer break could become a decisive point for two of the largest names in the Formula 1 driver market.

Verstappen’s future remains closely connected to the competitive development of Red Bull Racing. The aerodynamic package introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix produced a meaningful improvement, allowing the car to challenge for victory again and reducing concerns created by a more difficult start to the season than expected.

Verstappen has never publicly questioned his loyalty to Red Bull. However, the world champion is expected to require confidence that the team led by Laurent Mekies can sustain its technical progress and consistently provide machinery capable of fighting for titles.

According to RacingNews365, information surrounding Verstappen’s contract suggests that an exit clause could become relevant after the Hungarian Grand Prix. The details have not been officially confirmed by either the driver or the team, but the reported timing makes the Hungaroring weekend a logical point for greater clarity.

If Red Bull can continue the momentum established in Austria, it could strengthen the possibility of Verstappen remaining and potentially lead to discussions over a commitment extending beyond his current deal through 2028. A failure to sustain that progress would renew questions over the project’s long-term direction.

The Hungarian Grand Prix is also important for Alonso because Aston Martin is scheduled to introduce a major AMR26 upgrade at the Hungaroring. The Spanish driver wants to assess whether the package provides credible evidence of recovery before making a decision about 2027.

Alonso’s contract expires at the end of the 2026 season, while Aston Martin is understood to remain willing to retain him. Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll continues to regard Alonso’s experience as valuable to the project, although the final decision is expected to remain with the 44-year-old driver.

The same report states that Flavio Briatore is interested in bringing Alonso back to the Enstone-based team. No official announcement has been made, making the performance of Aston Martin’s Hungarian upgrade a more concrete indicator than unconfirmed driver-market discussions.

Alonso’s decision could also influence the future of Esteban Ocon. Haas’ option on the French driver is reportedly due to expire at the end of July, while Aston Martin has been identified as one possible destination if Alonso chooses to leave.

Ocon possesses experience of the 2026 regulations and maintains a close relationship with Lance Stroll, but there is no confirmation that such a move will occur. Even if Alonso remains, driver-market reports have suggested that a third-driver position with a possible 2028 race opportunity is one scenario being considered by several teams.

The 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix could therefore become a crossroads for Red Bull, Aston Martin, Haas and several leading drivers. Until official announcements are made, however, the futures of Verstappen, Alonso and Ocon will continue to depend on contract negotiations and the technical evidence produced before the summer break.
