Marc Marquez caused a stir in the Motegi paddock after admitting he sent a body double to take his place in the pre-Japanese GP rider kart race. The unorthodox move by the Ducati star earned him a stern reprimand from championship officials, but the Spaniard stood firm on his competitive priorities.
The Japanese GP schedule originally featured a fun karting event on Sunday morning. However, last-minute timetable adjustments following Saturday tire concerns squeezed the schedule, prompting teams to request an extended warm-up session right before race day kicked off.
Needing vital physiotherapy and ice for his right arm after the extended morning session, Marquez decided to skip the karting antics. Instead, a doppelganger wearing his helmet and gear was sent out to the grid, instantly raising suspicions among his fellow competitors in the pit lane.
Title rival Jorge Martin spotted the impersonator immediately and even attempted to lift the visor on the grid, though the switch was successfully shielded. While the stunt drew a reprimand from IRTA, Marquez unapologetically defended his selfish approach to protecting his physical condition for the main Grand Prix.
