Manuel Gonzalez has dropped a strong hint that he will remain in Moto2 for the 2027 season, despite missing out on a MotoGP seat. The Spanish rider currently leads the championship by 35.5 points over Izan Guevara and is on course to win the 2026 Moto2 title. However, unlike his rivals Guevara, David Alonso, Senna Agius, and Dani Holgado, who have secured MotoGP rides for 2027, Gonzalez has been left without a premier-class offer.
Gonzalez has expressed that his current environment at Intact GP is the best he could ask for. "Well, what I evaluate the most, is that I am in the best place that I can be now," he said. "I'm super happy to be in this team, nothing can be better in my environment. We are happy, I'm enjoying riding, I'm winning races, so why search for something new?"
Intact GP team manager Jurgen Lingg had previously suggested that Gonzalez might move to WorldSBK if Senna Agius stepped up to MotoGP. However, Lingg emphasised that Gonzalez would need a really good Superbike seat, otherwise he would stay with the team. Gonzalez's latest comments seem to close the door on a WorldSBK switch and indicate he will remain in Moto2.
If Gonzalez clinches the 2026 Moto2 crown, he would become only the third rider in history to attempt to defend the title, following Tito Rabat and Johann Zarco. Rabat, the 2014 champion, finished third the next season before eventually moving to MotoGP. Zarco successfully defended his title in 2016, becoming Moto2's only double champion to date. Both riders later got their MotoGP chance.
Gonzalez acknowledges that he is ready for MotoGP and wants to prove he can be a top rider there. "Of course, I know that I'm ready for MotoGP, and I want to show there that I can also be a top guy there," he added. "It's like maybe when you are searching so hard for something and you don't get it, just try to enjoy the moment, enjoy the present, and it will arrive sooner or later if you are giving your maximum."
With seven rounds remaining, Gonzalez is focused on maintaining consistency and securing the title. The decision to stay in Moto2 could be a strategic move, given the fierce competition in MotoGP and limited seats available. Additionally, remaining with Intact GP, where he has found comfort and peak performance, could be key to achieving greater success.
For Moto2 fans, Gonzalez's decision is certainly good news. They will continue to witness the talented rider in the intermediate class before he eventually makes the step up to MotoGP. Meanwhile, his rivals who have already secured MotoGP rides will pose a challenge for Gonzalez to prove he belongs there too.
