Arvid Lindblad ended the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in seventh place, but the main talking point was his collision with Racing Bulls teammate Liam Lawson during the Safety Car restart. The British rookie did not hide his regret and publicly apologized to Lawson and the team.
The incident occurred at Turn 1 as the race resumed after the Safety Car period. Chaos was triggered by a move from Alpine's Franco Colapinto, which forced several drivers to take evasive action. In the melee, Lindblad could not avoid contact with Lawson, sending the New Zealander into a spin and out of contention.
Apology and Incident Analysis
“First of all, I want to apologize to Liam and the team for the incident at Turn 1 after the restart,” Lindblad said. “The situation was chaotic: the pack had bunched up and we were all on the limit, so I think everyone braked a bit too late. I was ready to attack Esteban, but he moved at the last moment and I had nowhere to go.”
Nevertheless, Lindblad stressed that overall it was a positive race. “It was a difficult weekend, so bringing home points is definitely a positive. Huge credit to the whole team for the work done: we managed the race well and it was fun battling the two Haas cars at the end. Now we can't wait to get back on track in the coming weeks, with the races in Malaysia and Singapore,” he added.
On the other side, Lawson had to settle for 12th place, missing out on the top 10. However, the New Zealander did not create any controversy. “It wasn't my best race today, but I'm happy the team managed to score valuable points and close the gap in the constructors' fight against Alpine. We struggled with race pace all weekend, so that's something we'll work on in the rest of this triple-header. We got involved in an incident at Turn 1 during the restart; that caused damage to the car and prevented us from pushing as much as we wanted. We'll learn from today and get back on track next week, ready to fight again,” Lawson explained.
With this result, Racing Bulls added valuable points and extended their lead over Alpine in the constructors' standings. The Faenza-based team showed solid performance throughout the weekend, despite the incident involving both drivers. Lindblad's consistency in scoring points in the last three races is a positive sign for the young team.
The Baku incident serves as a reminder of the fierce competition in the midfield, where even the smallest mistake can have major consequences. Racing Bulls will now shift focus to the next races in Malaysia and Singapore, where they are determined to continue their positive momentum and strengthen their position in the standings.
