Charles Leclerc inadvertently disclosed sensitive technical details during a post-race interview with Sky Italia after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver appeared flustered when asked if his car was running the latest ADUO 2 power unit specification. He candidly replied, "I had the latest specification," before catching himself and adding, "I don't know if I'm saying something I shouldn't. But I thought you knew." The incident followed a disappointing race for Ferrari at the Baku City Circuit. Leclerc, who started from the front row alongside George Russell, immediately lost a position to Oscar Piastri and lacked the pace to challenge the leaders. He ultimately finished fourth, while teammate Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult afternoon to finish sixth. This result extends Ferrari's struggles, as they have been unable to match Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull in recent races.
Leclerc emphasised that Ferrari urgently needs upgrades to close the gap. "They were very strong," he said of Mercedes. "McLaren were also strong – not maybe as strong as Red Bull, but Red Bull were particularly strong. We know they have a very strong power unit so this is a good race for them, but still. We were quite far off Mercedes, far off Red Bull, a bit behind McLaren – these are our competitors and it's not new. It's [been] quite a few races now that we're losing a little bit of track to them, so it's important that we react to that and that we bring upgrades in order to close the gap again."
Leclerc's failure to convert qualifying promise into race pace has become a recurring theme. Despite starting second, he was unable to hold his position and was overtaken by Piastri. Ferrari's lack of race pace compared to rivals is a major concern, highlighting issues beyond just the power unit, such as tyre management and race strategy.
With this result, Ferrari's hopes of contending for the Formula 1 world title this year appear all but over. They are 160 points behind Mercedes in the constructors' championship. In the drivers' standings, Hamilton remains third but has slipped 103 points behind leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli and has also lost ground to Russell. Leclerc sits fifth, 20 points behind Hamilton. This puts Ferrari in a difficult position to salvage their season.
The leak of engine specification information could be an additional blow for Ferrari. Rival teams will undoubtedly try to analyse any data they can obtain. Although no major secrets were revealed, the incident highlights the sensitivity of technical information in the paddock. Ferrari may need to tighten their communication protocols to prevent a repeat.
Looking ahead, Ferrari face a tough task to recover. They must rapidly develop the car and improve race performance to remain competitive. Leclerc and Hamilton, as two top drivers, will not be content to languish. However, with Mercedes and Red Bull dominating, time is running out and pressure is mounting. The next race will be a crucial test for the Maranello squad to prove they can still compete at the highest level.
