Arvid Lindblad has issued a public apology to his Racing Bulls team-mate Liam Lawson following their collision during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The British rookie secured six points with a seventh-place finish around the Baku City Circuit, but the race was overshadowed by the incident with Lawson during a safety car restart.
The collision occurred after Williams' Alex Albon crashed, triggering a safety car period. On the restart, Lindblad braked later than both Lawson and Haas' Esteban Ocon, who were ahead of him. He ended up sandwiched between the two cars, making contact with Lawson, which sent the latter into a spin and ultimately resulted in a 12th-place finish outside the points. The stewards reviewed the incident and deemed no further action necessary due to "the restricted space available to [Lindblad]".
Following the race, Lindblad took to social media to take responsibility and praise the team's power unit performance. "Strong race today, really happy to bring it home in P7," he wrote on his Instagram story. "It’s not been an easy week, and I’m frustrated with how I handled some of it. We’ve struggled as a team too, so I’m really happy with how we bounced back and maximised today on a difficult weekend. Big shoutout to the PU boys - you gave me an absolute rocketship today. Gutted about what happened with Liam - sorry mate. Glad we were still able to bring some points home for the team."
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 immediately after the race, Lawson revealed the collision left a hole in his floor. "I need to watch it, but I mean, we're all coming into Turn 1 on the restart, and I just got smoked from my left, put a hole in my floor as well," he explained. "So I don't really know what gap he was looking for. In the middle of both of us going into Turn 1, I just don't understand it."
For Lindblad, the result in Baku was a saving grace amid the pressures of being a rookie. Despite the incident with Lawson, he showed the speed and consistency required at the F1 level. Meanwhile, Lawson, who is also fighting to secure his position, had to accept the bitter reality of losing potential points. This incident serves as a valuable lesson for both drivers, especially in terms of communication and risk-taking during restarts.
Racing Bulls themselves are battling in the midfield of the constructors' championship, where every point matters. Losing Lawson's points in Baku could impact the team's final standings. However, with many races remaining, both drivers are expected to improve their chemistry and focus on the team's overall performance.
