Liam Lawson has confirmed he apologised to Pierre Gasly following their heavy collision during the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026. The incident occurred while both drivers were battling for the final points-paying position in the early stages of the race.

The Racing Bulls driver attempted a move into Turn 17 but lost control under braking due to a sudden technical failure. Lawson’s car locked up and continued straight, making contact with Gasly, whose car flipped before coming to rest against the barriers. The crash immediately ended Gasly’s race.

Lawson clarified that the root cause of the incident was a gearbox failure that occurred at the braking zone. The malfunction forced the car into neutral, preventing any downshifting and eliminating engine braking. This significantly reduced deceleration capability and left the driver without sufficient control to avoid the collision.

“I went to brake for the last corner, and when I hit the brakes, we had a gearbox failure. The car went straight into neutral and I couldn’t downshift or slow it down.”

“It’s a shame because it took Pierre out. They were having a very strong weekend.”

From a regulatory perspective, the technical nature of the failure was key in the stewards’ assessment, resulting in no penalty for Lawson. In Formula 1, component failures such as gearbox issues are typically considered beyond driver control, provided there is no evidence of driver-induced error.

Lawson also sought out Gasly after the race to explain the situation directly. Such actions are consistent with paddock standards when incidents have significant consequences for other competitors.

“I went to see him to apologise. I wanted to explain that I wasn’t trying to brake late. I just had no gearbox and no control.”

For Alpine, the retirement of Gasly contrasted with a strong result from team-mate Franco Colapinto, who secured a career-best seventh-place finish. The result underlined the team’s competitive package in Miami, particularly in tyre management and aerodynamic efficiency across high-speed sectors.

The incident has implications for the tightly contested midfield battle, where reliability and execution are critical in securing points. As the championship moves towards the European rounds, consistency and technical robustness will remain decisive factors.
