Ahead of a potentially decisive weekend at the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix, the internal dynamic within the Mercedes garage has captured the attention of the entire Formula 1 paddock. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has offered words of encouragement and vocal support to George Russell following a frustrating and challenging campaign.
The 2026 Formula 1 season actually commenced in dream fashion for Russell, who looked unbeatable as he dominated the opening weekend at the Australian Grand Prix. That commanding performance initially positioned him as the early favorite to mount a serious championship charge under the new regulatory era.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically as the calendar progressed. His teammate emerged as an unstoppable force, securing an impressive nine Grand Prix victories so far this season. This stellar run puts the youngster on the brink of capturing the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship this very weekend, forcing Russell to watch his garage-mate clinch the ultimate prize during only his sophomore year in the sport.

Addressing the significant performance gap between the two Silver Arrows drivers during Thursday's media session, Hamilton provided crucial context regarding the mechanical misfortunes that have plagued one side of the garage throughout the championship battle.
"I don't really know what the challenges have been from not being in the team," Hamilton told the media on Thursday. "I do know he's had a lot, a lot of problems, a lot more, or most of the problems have been on George's car this season. So I think it's been very, very challenging for him, whereas Kimi's kind of had a much more simple, in respect to kind of issues with the car through the year. But he's also delivered every single weekend."
Despite the difficult points deficit, Hamilton remains fully confident in his former teammate's innate speed and racing pedigree. "So, I think George had really good pace, particularly at the beginning. But it's like a couple of steps forward and a couple of steps back. I don't really know why the gap is as big as it is. But I'm sure he'll bounce back. You know, every weekend he comes back and gives his best."/p>
Heading into the final stretch of the 2026 season, Russell currently sits 123 points adrift of the championship leader in the standings. With just 125 points remaining on offer across the final events, a mathematical path to glory remains open, though the British driver will undoubtedly require an extraordinary stroke of luck to pull off an improbable title turnaround.
