The 2026 season has been a turning point for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari. After an inconsistent 2025 campaign, he has been dominant this year, now sitting second in the drivers' standings with a 31-point advantage over teammate Charles Leclerc.

This shift has sparked sharp analysis from former F1 engineer Rob Smedley. On the High Performance Racing podcast, Smedley described Leclerc as looking slightly "lost" amid Hamilton's superiority. He noted this is the first time in Leclerc's Ferrari career that a teammate has held a significant upper hand in the first half of a season.

Smedley, who previously worked at Ferrari and Williams, highlighted the team's changes to braking components to help Leclerc. Nevertheless, he believes the Monegasque still appears confused by the car's characteristics.

"Charles wasn't happy with the car. I know they changed components around the braking system, materials, and stuff like that. But it felt like he was just slightly lost for a driver of his experience and how good he is," Smedley said.

Interestingly, Smedley's podcast co-host Otmar Szafnauer advised Ferrari not to intervene too much. The former Alpine team principal believes Leclerc can find his own way, as seen in the last two races.

"No, leave him alone. I would not have a conversation, but be supportive. Lewis at the beginning of the year was a bit more ahead, but Charles has stepped it up in the last two," Szafnauer said.

Trailing by 31 points, Leclerc still has a chance to fight back. But pressure is mounting, especially with Hamilton's consistent performance under the new technical regulations. Can Leclerc turn the tide, or will he fall further behind?
