Charles Leclerc has outlined a theory behind McLaren’s sudden return to the front at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026, suggesting the improvement stems from better optimisation rather than purely new upgrades.
During Sprint Qualifying, Lando Norris secured pole position with a clear margin over Kimi Antonelli, marking a significant shift in competitiveness after McLaren had not consistently featured at the front in the opening rounds of the season.
Leclerc indicated that McLaren’s underlying performance potential had been present from the start of the year, but was not fully realised due to a lack of system optimisation. With recent improvements, the team appears to have aligned its package more effectively, unlocking previously untapped performance.
On the Ferrari side, Leclerc identified tyre behaviour as a key limitation during qualifying. While the medium compound performed effectively, the soft tyre failed to deliver the expected grip and consistency, impacting overall lap-time performance.
From a technical perspective, this discrepancy suggests sensitivity to tyre operating windows and setup configuration, both of which are critical under high-temperature conditions such as those in Miami. Achieving optimal balance between compounds remains a key focus area for Ferrari.
Despite qualifying fourth, Leclerc expressed confidence in Ferrari’s race pace, indicating that the car performs more competitively over longer runs. This opens the possibility of recovering positions through strategy and tyre management during the Sprint and main race.
The contrast between McLaren’s improved execution and Ferrari’s ongoing optimisation challenges highlights the fine margins that define performance under the 2026 regulations.
The Miami weekend will therefore provide a clear indication of whether Ferrari can convert its race pace into results, while also confirming whether McLaren’s resurgence represents a sustained step forward in the competitive order.
