The collision between Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix became a talking point. Both drive for Racing Bulls, but the stewards decided no further action was necessary. This decision contrasts with the 10-second penalty given to Franco Colapinto (Alpine) for hitting Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris.
The incident occurred at Turn 1 during a safety car restart. Lawson and Esteban Ocon were side-by-side, while Lindblad locked up and hit Lawson from behind. As a result, Lawson's floor was punctured, ruining his race. Lindblad finished seventh, while Lawson missed out on points.
Lawson was baffled by the stewards' decision. "I'm not going to protest my team-mate, but I don't understand it because I got hit so hard that it put a hole in my floor," he told The Race. "I was just turning for the corner, giving the guy space. So where I'm sitting, I don't understand, but let's say it's great for the team."
Lindblad apologised to the team and Lawson. He cited two mitigating circumstances: the chaotic restart and Ocon's move. "It was an absolute mess. The field wasn't bunched up, and we had to manage the battery which wasn't in a good window. Everyone braked too late, and Esteban moved under braking, so I had to take avoiding action and locked up," he explained.
The incident highlighted the challenges of restarts in Baku, with a 2 km straight and cold tyres and brakes. Lindblad added, "Both restarts weren't very good. I'm sure it will be raised at the briefing next week."
The stewards' decision not to penalise the incident raises questions, especially as Lawson was the victim and lost a points opportunity. Racing Bulls must move on and focus on the next race in Malaysia, where Colapinto will serve a grid penalty.
