Liam Lawson has responded to Max Verstappen's claim that Formula 1's 2026 cars are too easy to drive. The New Zealander insists that only he and Yuki Tsunoda truly understand the complexity of piloting the latest generation of machinery.
It all started when Verstappen told the BBC that the 2026 cars are relatively simpler, killing the chance for talented drivers to make a real difference. He cited Lawson and Tsunoda's encouraging performances despite limited experience in the Red Bull RB22 and Racing Bulls after Isack Hadjar's injury, though he stressed the example was not meant as a dig.
Lawson, however, sees it differently. Speaking in a press conference attended by FormulaPassion, he acknowledged Verstappen's point but disagreed. “Easier to drive? Honestly, I don't know. It's a general question about this generation of cars. I don't think they're simpler, quite the opposite. They're quite complicated in terms of energy, but I understand what Verstappen means. There are aspects beyond our control, especially how the battery delivers power,” he said.
He added a crucial perspective: “I and Yuki are the ones who've driven these cars, so we're the only two who really know what it's like to find the right speed with a different car. And it's definitely not easy.” His words suggest Verstappen's view might not fully capture the reality for younger drivers.
So far, Lawson has shown promise. His Red Bull debut at Zandvoort drew praise for closing the gap to Verstappen in qualifying, though he struggled at Monza. Madrid will be his third Grand Prix with the Milton Keynes squad this year, more than his 2025 outings as a full-time driver.
This debate highlights the technical dilemma of F1 2026. New regulations demand a balance between combustion and electric power, often making the cars unpredictable. For experienced drivers like Verstappen, adaptation may seem instant. But for Lawson and Tsunoda, every corner is a new lesson.
Ultimately, Lawson's comments remind us that behind the wheel, nothing is truly easy. And in the heat of competition, differing perspectives only add another layer to this season's F1 narrative.
