Jari-Matti Latvala is back at the helm of Toyota Gazoo Racing at the most critical moment: the WRC season finale in Sardinia, where three of his drivers—Elfyn Evans, Sami Pajari, and Oliver Solberg—are all chasing their first world title. This is no ordinary season closer; it's a fierce battle blending experience, ambition, and pressure on the rugged gravel tracks.
Latvala himself had been absent from the WRC paddock due to his commitments in the European historic championship, but he returns to guide the team when it matters most. Previously, Juha Kankkunen took the reins and did a commendable job. Now, it's Latvala's turn to keep the team focused amid an internal fight that is heating up.
This season has been Toyota's with a dominant display: 11 wins from 12 rounds. The only interruption came from Hyundai when Thierry Neuville won in Portugal in May. With the manufacturers' title already secured, the team's full attention shifts to the drivers' championship involving three of their crews.
Elfyn Evans, Toyota's long-time star, holds the upper hand in the title race. However, he can't afford to relax. Teammate Sami Pajari is 17 points behind, while Oliver Solberg is just 21 points adrift. With a maximum of 30 points available in Sardinia, anything can happen.
Latvala emphasized that his top priority is to ensure all three drivers have a strong and reliable car. "For our team, the most important thing is to provide them all with a strong and reliable car so that they can have an even fight. We know that Sardinia can be a rough rally with a lot of rocks, so it can be hard for the tyres and the drivers will need to calculate the risks they take," he said.
Facing this challenge, Evans is in the toughest position as he must open the road on the first day. However, his vast rally experience is a valuable asset. Meanwhile, Pajari has shown rapid growth throughout the year, and Solberg has bounced back after a topsy-turvy start. For both, this is a golden opportunity to challenge for a title for the first time.
Rally Sardinia kicks off with shakedown on Thursday morning, followed by the Ittiri superspecial in the evening. A total of 17 special stages covering around 307 kilometres await, all concluding on Sunday. The Sardinia course is known for being rough and dusty, often deciding the fate of drivers at the end of the season.
With three Toyota drivers locked in a tight battle, the team must balance healthy competition and teamwork. Latvala, who has felt the pressure as a driver, now must play the role of a fair leader. Will Evans hold on to his advantage, or will Pajari and Solberg snatch the title in the final moments? All will be answered on the gravel tracks of Sardinia.
