Lando Norris Claims Dramatic 2026 Hungarian F1 Victory

Lando Norris claimed his and McLaren’s first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season after beating Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli in a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix.

Norris started from pole position but lost the lead to Oscar Piastri at Turn 2 on the opening lap. Piastri then held first place throughout the opening half as McLaren resisted Norris’ requests to be allowed past his team-mate.

The internal battle changed after Piastri made his second pit stop and returned to the circuit in traffic. He then made contact with Carlos Sainz in the opening sector, losing crucial time in the fight for the lead.

Norris used clear air before his own second stop to produce strong pace. When the reigning world champion returned to the circuit, he was ahead of Piastri and held the advantage in the victory battle.

Piastri’s opportunity to respond ended when his car suffered an apparent gearbox problem. He was forced to stop and triggered a Virtual Safety Car, ending McLaren’s chance of securing a one-two finish at the Hungaroring.

The VSC period reshaped the order once again. Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli stayed out to retain second and third, while Ferrari made additional stops for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton initially emerged from the pit lane ahead of Antonelli but was required to return the position after replays showed the Ferrari reached the relevant VSC line slightly behind the Mercedes. A five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane then ended Hamilton’s podium hopes.

Norris ultimately took the chequered flag ahead of Verstappen and Antonelli. Leclerc moved into fourth once Hamilton’s penalty was applied, with Hamilton classified fifth.

Isack Hadjar secured sixth for Red Bull. George Russell recovered to seventh after the anti-stall system activated at the start and dropped him as low as 19th.

Racing Bulls scored with Liam Lawson in eighth and Arvid Lindblad in 10th. Nico Hulkenberg separated the pair in ninth for Audi, while Gabriel Bortoleto narrowly missed the points in 11th.

Aston Martin showed progress with its upgraded cars as Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finished 13th and 14th. The pair split the Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto and finished ahead of every Haas and Williams entry.

Alongside Piastri, both Cadillac drivers failed to finish. Valtteri Bottas suffered overheating brakes, while Sergio Perez retired with an issue at the front left of his car.

Norris became another new Grand Prix winner in 2026 after Mercedes and Ferrari had previously controlled the victories. The result also delivered McLaren’s first win of the campaign.
